A 50 year old presented with ongoing pain around the outside of the right knee just above the knee joint.
The pain was worse with long periods of walking and when moving from a sit to stand position.
Performing an ultrasound indicated degeneration of the underlying soft tissue as the iliotibial band passed over the lateral femoral condyle (indicated by the red star).
This problem is called iliotibial band friction syndrome.
Treatment options include:
- Correcting the abnormal mechanics when walking (overly flat pronated foot)
- Wearing a more supportive solid shoe
- Orthotic insoles
- Addressing the degeneration of the soft tissue
- Dry needle fenestration
- Shockwave therapy
