Shin Splints (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome)
What are Shin Splints also called Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS)?
Medial Tibial stress syndrome (MTSS), commonly known as “Shin Splints” is a very common injury in the lower leg and is one of the most common cause of leg pain in athletes.
Typically pain is experienced on the posterior medial aspect of the tibial and on the anterior lateral aspect of the tibia (see picture below)
What causes Shin Splints also called Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS)?
The exact etiology of shin splints is unknown it is thought that the pain is a result of irritation of the tibia. It has been suggested that the irritation is caused by over activity (pulling) of the tibialis anterior and tibialis posterior on the tibia.

Risk factures are classified as intrinsic or extrinsic risk factor.
