What are Chilblains

Chilblains are painful sores on the end of the lesser toes and sometimes fingers.

Red and swollen toes on foot Chilblains are usually seen in the colder months, and are typically preceded by the toes ‘tingling’ and feeling ‘numb’ and ‘itchy’


Causes of chilblains

  • Vascular hypersensitivity (Raynauds Phenomenon)

     

  • Raynauds Phenomenon

Complications of chilblains 

  • Pain
  • Ulceration
  • Infection

Treatment of chilblains

  • Avoid extreme temperature changes – very hot showers and very cold floors
  • Thick woollen socks
  • Wax baths
  • Nifedipine Compound Cream
  • Haemorrhoid cream (Rectogesic)
