A 15 year old presented with complaints of pain around the arch of the left foot. There was normal movement at the ankle but there was reduced subtalar joint inversion and eversion on the left side.
They had significantly flat foot which was worse on the left side
Performing an ultrasound of the medial aspect of the subtalar joint indicated scleosis of the bones. on the left side along the joint line. This finding is abnormal and indicates joint pathology.
A tarsal coalition is an abnormal connection that develops between two bones in the back of the foot (the tarsal bones). The tarsal bones include the calcaneus (heel bone), talus, navicular, cuboid and cuneiform bones.
Treatment options include:
- Wearing a more supportive solid shoe
- A deep heel cup orthotic with rearfoot correction to reduced the jamming of the sinus tarsi.
If there is no resolution to the pain surgical intervention may be necessary.
