A 35 year old presented with ongoing pain on along the top of the 2nd metatarsal. They had recently started running and being very active in high impact gym activities.
There was a 2nd metatarsal stress fracture which was present when ultrasounding the metatarsal. There was a disruption in the cortex of the metatarsal with swelling of the periosteum.
Treatment options include:
- Cessation of high impact activity
- Wearing a more supportive solid shoe.
- Orthotic insoles to reduce the strain and stress to the metatarsal.
- CAM walker immobilisation for 3-4 weeks until there was no tenderness along the length of the metatarsal.
