Case Study 12: Midfoot Arthritis

Midfoot Arthritis

A 55 year old presented with ongoing pain in the right foot. The pain was worse with long periods of walking and when standing for long hours on the foot. They had an X-ray which did not indicate any problems.

Performing an ultrasound of the plantar and dorsal aspect (bottom and top) of the midfoot, indicated degeneration of the joints also known as midfoot arthritis.

Pain from arthritis is exaggerated with movement. Therefore the aim is to minimise movement this can be achieved with

  • Orthotics
  • Footwear modifications – stiffening the shoe and using rocker soled shoes
  • Heel raises to reduce the dorsal compression
  • Analgesia
  • Surgery (fusion)
