What is a Bunionette (Tailors Bunion)?
A bunionette otherwise know as a tailors bunion is an abnormal bony protuberance, or bump, on the outer side of the fifth toe or metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ).
This problem can start out as small and painless, but can become larger and painful
Causes of a Bunionette
The cause of a bunionette is unknown. Certain factors are though to increase the risk for the development of bunionette including:
- Genetics
- Non- Supportive footwear
- Flat arched feet
- High arched feet
- Trauma
Diagnosis of a Bunionette
Diagnosis is generally made with specific signs and symptoms – when the pain occurs and the location of the changes in the toe.
Treatment of a Bunionette
The first line treatment of a bunionette is to eliminate the pressure on the area this can be with
- Choosing a shoe with a wider toe box
- Footwear Stretching
- Offloading the area with padding
If there is no resolution to the pain then surgical management is the next line of treatment
